Persistent "purring" and turbulence noise from laptop fans

Avatar

Good Morning

I have found some unusual fan behavior on my laptop. In this last month the fans have developed a strange noise that doesn't sound like the normal rotation sound. Initially, it sounded like the blades were hitting an object or experiencing turbulence. But since this only occurred  when the fans turned on I didn't make much of it. However, it has evolved to a constant "purring" sound that is constantly present, even when I am not doing any heavy activity (yes even in the Energy Saver Mode). The fans now cycle rapidly, turning on with a rattling noise, shutting off briefly, and then immediately repeating the cycle.

Was this "purring" sound found by anyone before?

Best regards

The fans of my KDE Slimbook VII (also Excalibur Blue) annoy me since I got it end of last year and a constant "purring" is audible. The fans are probably still not exposed to the system. They never stop spinning, even if the system is idle. Perhaps it depends on the surface you place your laptop or on the level of surround noise of your environment, but on my system it is the low noise situation that signals that the computer is working but not under pressure.

Exactly the same here, the only thing that bugs me is that it does make the weird noise, which makes it way louder and difficult to ignore. Since I can't open the laptop (from what I know it voids the warranty) I can't inspect if the fan is hitting something. But I found it unlikely since you have the exact same issue. Perhaps it was not properly sized in the factory or maybe is just loose (I hope). I love this laptop but this issue with the fans + the keyboard keys which sometimes are detected as being pressed even when the key is not being physically pressed are really taking away from the experience. If these issues were fixed it would be great, I chose Slimbook mainly because their support has been praised by a lot of people so I am hoping they can fix this.

Yes, please do so, David404. I opened also opened a ticket on 01/16/2026 regarding the ACPI tables of the KDE Slimbook VII and the fan noise, mentioning that

"The most persistent annoyance is the fan noise at idle. Even at 6.7W power draw and ~32°C CPU temp, the fans run audibly. Fan control isn't exposed via ACPI (I confirmed this in Slimbook OS as well - acpi-fan driver has no bound devices). If the EC fan curve could be adjusted in a future firmware update, that would significantly improve the experience."

Hope this will be solved, soon!
